Scholarships
You do not need to be on a scholarship to participate in AFROTC! In fact, most of the cadets at Detachment 90 are not on scholarship. There are, however, a number of opportunities available for those who qualify. See below for a few of the scholarships available to AFROTC cadets at Colorado State University.
High School Scholarship Program (HSSP)
HSSP awards are chosen and distributed nationally. The application process begins in High School and focuses on factors that indicate you would make a good fit for the AFROTC program and service as a military officer upon graduation. To make that determination, the package focuses on GPA, medical screening, SAT/ACT scores, a fitness test, and extracurricular activities.
There are several types of High School Scholarships awarded every year, offering the following benefits:
- Up to Full Tuition Coverage
- Monthly Stipend
- Book Stipend
For more information about HSSP and the application process, visit: High School Scholarship | Scholarships | U.S. Air Force ROTC
Provost Room & Board Stipend
At CSU, HSSP recipients have the opportunity to receive a Provost Room & Board Stipend, granting up to $8,000 per year toward on-campus housing costs. Eligibility criteria are the same as those required to activate/maintain an AFROTC scholarship.
In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP)
There are multiple types of In-College scholarships offered. When budget constraints allow, the first type of In-College Scholarship is similar to a High School Scholarship in terms of what it covers monetarily. These are awarded to active cadets based on merit and cadre recommendation rather than an application process. When funds are available, cadre nominate cadets once in the Spring semester and once in the Fall semester based on academic, physical and military performance to compete for an ICSP on a national board.
The Charles McGee Leadership Award is the second type of In-College Scholarship awarded to all eligible individuals that are not already on an AFROTC scholarship and have been selected to commission into the Air Force or Space Force by receiving an enrollment allocation to Field Training. It covers up to $18,000 per year of tuition and fees for 2 years. It cannot be applied to graduate studies but can be converted to an up to $10,000 per year “housing scholarship”, covering room only, for on-campus housing if the conversion is made at the beginning of the academic year (Fall semester).
More information on these opportunities can be found here: College Student Scholarship | Scholarships | U.S. Air Force ROTC
Memorial Scholarships
In addition to national AFROTC Scholarships, Detachment 90 offers several other opportunities for our cadets. Memorial Scholarships are dedicated to the memory of certain officers that earned their commission through the same program at CSU.
- 1st Lt Michael L. Lacy
- Capt David B. Greene
- 2d Lt Kirsten L.Tool
- Capt Mark G. Danielson
- 1st Lt Eriks L. Sudmalis
- Col Bob Arnold
- Col Russell K. Havighorst
- Capt Bruce L. Cardy

Leadership Training
In Air Force ROTC, you’ll learn the principles of leadership both in the classroom and through hands-on management and problem-solving exercises to hone valuable skills that are applicable both in and out of the military. Every week you will have the opportunity to lead your peers in both small team and organizational leadership settings through physical training, Aerospace Studies classes, Leadership Laboratory and cadet-run clubs.

Professional Development
To prepare for careers as officers in the Air and Space Forces, cadets take courses focused on effective leadership traits such as problem-solving, management, conflict resolution, and innovation. They are challenged to apply those concepts throughout the program and learn the role of a military leader in today’s society. In fact, CSU awards an Aerospace Studies minor for military leadership to students that complete all AFROTC academic courses in addition to one entry-level Military Science (MLSC) course and HIST 357.
To ensure well-rounded candidates Air Force ROTC also offers additional, varied professional development opportunities that consist of military installation visits, Freefall Parachuting, Glider Training, Powered Flight, Special Tactics Training and many more!
