AFROTC in a Nutshell

Air Force ROTC is a three to four-year program, split into two distinct courses, the General Military Course (GMC) and the Professional Officers Course (POC), designed to prepare highly qualified men and women to commission as officers in the United States Air and Space Forces.

Who? Any full-time, in-resident college freshman or sophomore* who is a United States citizen or plans to become a United States citizen

What? 7 hours or less of mandatory weekly physical fitness, academic classes, and practical military training

Where? Offered at over 145 universities across the United States

When? 3-4 year program as you work toward your Bachelor’s degree

Why? To commission as an officer into the world’s greatest Air and Space Forces!

*If you are a college junior+ or Graduate student, contact us! You may still be able to join and we can advise you on your specific situation.

What is the Time Commitment?

Time commitment will vary between the GMC and POC, but generally you can count on the below mandatory events each week.

GMC (5-6 hours/week)
1-hour AS class, 1 day/week
1-hour Physical Training, 2-3 days/week
2-hour Lead Lab, 1 day/week

POC (7+ hours/week)
1.5-hours AS class, 2 days/week
1-hour Physical Training, 2-3 days/week
2-hour Lead Lab, 1 day/week

What are the Minimum Standards for Cadets?

Trademarks of a Successful Cadet

  1. Academics are first priority!
  2. Physical Fitness lifestyle
  3. 80% attendance for PMT (PT, AS class, LLAB)
  4. Passing AFOQT Score
  5. DODMERB Qualification

Is there a Service Obligation Afterward? When Does that Take Effect?

If you are not on an AFROTC scholarship, there is no obligation for the first two years of AFROTC participation. After selection for and acceptance of an Enrollment Allocation (EA) to Field Training at the end of the AS200 year, cadets will contract into AFROTC, commit to finishing the program and incur at least* a 4-year Active-Duty Service Commitment upon graduation and commissioning.

* Most career fields incur only a 4-year active-duty service commitment (ADSC). If you apply for a rated position (Pilot, Combat Systems Officer, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Pilot, Air Battle Manager), you will incur a 6-10 year ADSC upon completion of specialized training. Your cadre will counsel you on all of this in more depth as we discuss your goals before you make any commitments.

2. A Program Tailored to Prepare you to Become a Leader in the World

Using our experience, we have developed the program at Det 90 to create Leaders of Character, prepared to lead the Next Greatest Generation, whether they stay in the military for 4 or 40 years. Our goal is to provide our cadets with the skills necessary to be successful and make a positive difference wherever they find themselves in life. To that end, we round out the standard AFROTC curriculum in a way you’ll only find at Det 90.

Det 90 Difference:

  1. 4-class tiered system allows for appropriate expectation setting and progression at each stage of development and allows our cadets to mimic active-duty Airmen, NCO, SNCO and Officer tiers and roles.
  2. AS300s and AS400s are exposed to advanced Operational Planning and Debrief Concepts, typically reserved for field Grade Officers and above.
  3. Integration of civilian best practices in leadership and management for program development along with guest speakers and supplemental class materials provide a different lens to enrich understanding of military leadership concepts.
  4. With 130-150 cadets, Det 90’s size also lends itself to the perfect balance between varied leadership opportunities, close-knit camaraderie and personal mentorship opportunities with cadre

Did you know that Det 90 is one of the very few Detachments in the Nation with a dedicated personal trainer planning and running the PT program?
